JESSICA JONES SEASON 2 REVIEW

JESSICA JONES SEASON 2 (2018)

Rating: 6.4

Welcome to my last March review in Geek for Hire, this time with the newest season of the hit web show that premiered in 2015: Marvel's Jessica Jones.

After defeating her Archenemy Killgrave, Jessica Jones continues her duties as a P.I., a series of events lead her to investigate the mysterious organization IGH which is responsible for her powers. All of this sounds great, but unfortunately the way the ideas are executed makes this season one of the most tedious and dissapointing experiences I've had since Iron Fist.

First of all, I wasn't really sure if I wanted another season, the first one was very good, specially for its dark themes like sexuality, trauma, rape and consequences, also the performances from Krysten Ritter and the legendary David Tennant were brilliant.

In the comics, Jessica Jones doesn't have a Rogues Gallery per se, the only one that is well known as her nemesis is Killgrave AKA Purple Man. That is a big issue this time around: There is no definitive villain here, or a threat that really challenges the hero's journey, even though Killgrave is unmatched, the writers should've done something better.

Let's talk about the cast, Krysten Ritter as always, shines as the titular character, this sarcastic, alcoholic and traumatized superpowered detective is always a delight to watch on screen, when Jessica is not on screen, that's when the problem starts. The rest of the cast is good and they do their best with what it's given.

Just like many Marvel/Netflix shows, Jessica Jones has pacing issues, it takes an eternity for something to happen, the most interesting stuff happens around the last 10 minutes of the episode and that isn't saying much. I think the writer's intention was to make a more personal story but they suddenly forgot to make an engaging or good one to say the least, I don't care if there isn't a fight scene every episode like in Daredevil, but at least the best talkie dramas have engagement.

The main plot of Jessica investigating IGH and her confronting the "antagonist" are the only standout moments in this season, when we have the subplots involving Trish, Malcolm and Jeri Hogarth it feels like filler, Jeri's subplot specially is boring to death, if we take it out of the show, it would be the same thing. I think back at HQ they should re consider the whole 13 Episode season thing, because in the long term they will be getting the viewers bored instead of entertained. There were instances where I just wanted to watch something else, but I persisted, just for you, my dear readers.

The standout episodes are 7, 10 and 11, because at least something happens. There are certain references to the MCU, but let's be honest, we should give up on the idea of having the members of the Defenders show up in the movies. There are some nods as well of Trish becoming her comic book alter ego: Hellcat.

Concluding my review: Jessica Jones Season 2 wasn't good or bad, it was just a dissapointment, I wanted more but I felt I wasted 13 hours of my life in something that actually wasn't worth of it. If it wasn´t for some great character moments, the production values and the performances of Ritter and Janet McTeer, this season would've made the show jump the shark. If there's a Season 3, I don't think I'll be watching it, I don't wanna feel the same frustration this season caused me.

Well, March has ended. Tomorrow we'll start April with positive energy by celebrating the 50th Anniversary of 2001: A Space Odyssey, also this April will be the Marvel Month, we'll be celebrating 10 years of the MCU due to the long awaited premiere of Avengers: Infinity War. If you liked this, you can comment and share it, this blog isn't just mine, it's yours as well.
